Cassava processing and utilization in Thailand

Thailand is presently among the world's major producers of cassava roots and the biggest exporter of cassava products. The country has established a large cassava industry, exporting recently more than 9 million t of dry cassava products, mainly in the form of pellets (92 percent) and a small quantity of starch (7 percent). The pellets for export have to meet a quality standard as specified by the Thai authorities, while the starch for export is claimed by the manufacturer to meet the international standard for industrial use and for human consumption. Domestic consumption of cassava products such as chips and pellets in the local animal feed industry is negligible, if any. This is due to its price being not competitive with other locally-available sources of carbohydrate. Cassava starch is locally consumed in sizable quantities in the manufacturing of food seasoning (MSG), glucose and various foods. It is also used in small quantities in the paper, textile, glue, plywood, and pharmaceutical industries and in the production of amino acids. The current level of local consumption of cassava is, however, relatively low, being only about 7 percent of the total root output. The government of Thailand has shown great and increasing interest in the feasibility of expanding the local industrial utilization of the product, anticipating that it would prove economically advantageous. The research and development work to achieve this goal is outlined.
