The author determined that the total mass of a crop stand (crop and weed mass) is more or less constant and that the crop yield is reversely proportional to the weed mass (Lazauskas 1993). According to that law all agronomical, biological, mechanical and other methods of weed control increase crop yield to such an extent as they decrease the weed mass in the crop stand. This is the theoretical basis for weed control in ecological agriculture
