Oviposition deterrence in the sawflies Diprion pini (L.) and Gilpinia hercyniae (Htg.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae)

The sawflies Diprion pini (L.) and Gilpinia hercyniae Htg. are forestry pest insects. When disturbed, the larvae of both species discharge an oily oral effluent stored in diverticular pouches of the foregut. For many insect species, including other Diprionidae, the oral discharge of gut contents is known as a defense mechanism against enemies. Our laboratory experiments revealed that the oral effluent of both tested sawfly species is used intraspecifically as an oviposition deterrent against conspecific females. In G. hercyniae, ovipositional bioassays under semi-field conditions confirmed the laboratory results. Though the oral fluid is sequestered by the larvae from the resin of their host plants, the resin itself has no effect on the egg deposition. Furthermore, females, whose antennae were detached prior to experiment, are still repelled by the larval oral effluent
