After a state of knowledge report on weed control within plant rows using mechanical or sensoric plant identification systems, a new technology using ultra-sonic waves is described. The application of this system in a row culture of tobacco allowed the identification of the plants by ultrasonic waves and the electronic control of the weeding tools whereby the distance between tool and tobacco plant could be adjusted. An electronic slide control device is being tested at present with the objective to combine the plant identification system also with chemical and thermic weed control systems and to reach a sufficient working speed
