The interaction between low and/or uncertain rainfall and low and high extremes of temperature which limit productivity is discussed in relation to winter rainfall areas of the Mediterranean region. Means of reducing the effects of these stresses by either the application of sound agronomic practices of cultivars are considered, and illustrated with data from agronomic trials and computer simulation studies
