Hypertrophic and hyperplastic postnatal growth of muscle tissue in pigs

In the present study postnatal growth of four muscles between 9 and 24 weeks or 20 and 90 kg in German-Landrace pigs was investigated. The increase of DNA quantity or number of muscle tissue nuclei, that means DNA units, was defined as hyperplastic growth. Hypertrophic growth was defined as an increase of DNA unit size. Both processes were very important for growth of four investigated muscles. The number and the size of DNA units increased in investigated period for 2 to 2.7 fold. For growth of m. Iongissimus dorsi and m. psoas major both processes were equally important, but for growth of m. triceps brachii and m. biceps femoris the increase in DNA unit number and so hyperplastic growth was even more important
