A test of validity the distance methods for estimation stand density and basal area of trees

The article deals with the methods of forest stand's density and basal area assessment based on the spacing between trees. By means of models and simulation the validity and applicability of the methods for the assessing of the number of trees and basal area known up till now have been studied. In the test, the samples of differently dense stands and model stands of a random - Poisson's and different unit arrangement have been used. Special attention has been paid to a model method of a constant tree number, which has been known in forestry as the method of 6 trees and that of 2 x 6 trees. The question of the appropriate number of trees in a model and the applicability of these methods in the conditions of a random - group and other arrangement of trees has been dealt with
