WOOLPLAN, the national performance recording scheme for wool sheep breeders, has been operating since 1987. As of March, 1993, there are 21 fleece-testing laboratories accredited to provide the WOOLPLAN service, which represent almost all of the major fleece testing laboratories in Australia. However, there is still a large number of small non-accredited laboratories, concentrated mainly in Western Australia. Since being launched, WOOLPLAN, as a service, had concentrated on the main traits of economic importance to woolgrowers, but the WOOLPLAN Management Committee has been conscious of the need to review the importance and availability of information on other traits, such as those related to fibre diameter distribution. It is discussed how WOOLPLAN might include fibre diameter distribution in reports it provides to wool sheep breeders, in the context of opinions gained from a small survey of technical personnel. Also presented are estimates of the correlated responses in fibre diameter distribution to selection based on the current range of WOOLPLAN breeding objectives offered to the wool industry.
