Studies on alternative means of legume inoculation: Microbiological and agronomic appraisals of commercial procedures for inoculating soybeans with Bradyrhizobium japonicum

Seed inoculation as slurry or with gum arabic adhesive or by sprinkling inoculant on seed in the seed-box were compared with liquid inoculation of the seed bed. Liquid inoculation avoided losses of inoculant viability overall, but gave poorer colonization of the rhizosphere relative to numbers of rhizobia delivered to the seedbed, and slower nodulation, though this difference did not persist as plants aged. Application of inoculant in the seed-box was inferior to the other treatments, but the relative success of slurry application to seed and liquid application to the seedbed will probably depend on soil conditions.
