Why not have a soil test?

Soil analysis cannot be used as a predictor of fertiliser requirements in an established vineyard because it is near impossible to calibrate the test properly. The main difficulties arise from the longevity of the vines, and the problem of taking samples that match the complexity of the root zone. Soil tests can however be useful in providing basic information about the fertility of the vineyard soil from the point of view of cover crops or sod, and for particular problems such as salinity, acidity and sodicity.
