Influence of environmental conditions and some soil chemical properties on the carbon and nitrogen [organic matter] contents of some tropical Australian rainforest soils

Concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, soil pH, the sum of exchangeable basic cations, clay, and dithionate-extractable iron were examined in the surface soils of 72 rainforest sites from tropical Queensland. Soils derived from basalt were a distinct group, having higher values of most of the measured properties than non-basaltic soils; separate regression relationships for the 2 groups were obtained between organic matter and site temperature and precipitation; in the basaltic group, organic matter was negatively related to clay content, while in other soils the relationship was positive. Topography was important in soils formed on ridges or poorly drained, and age of soil in a juvenile soil on weakly weathered basalt.
