Trials of the Austoft mechanical coffee harvester were conducted in northern New South Wales to demonstrate the capabilities of the harvester, and to assess the need for further modifications to improve its efficiency. Difficulties such as harvesting on steep land, assessing the maturity of the crop, minimising tree damage, level of fruit removal per hectare and relative costs are discussed. Modifications, both completed and proposed, to the harvester to enhance performance are discussed.
