Relationship between work output and cardiorespiratory response to draught load exercise in two groups of draught horses

A study to compare the work output performance and the cardiorespiratory response to draught load work between mixed breed Chilean draught horse (Group I) and the first generation of descendants of purebred draught stallions with Chilean crossbred draught mares (Group II) was carried out. A cart equipped with a digital ergometer was used to measure draught force (kN), distance (m), time of work (S) and the work done (kJ). A standard load of 1.800 kg was pulled during an 8 hour journey, divided in 2 periods of 4 hours each (morning and afternoon), with a resting period of 2 hours in between. Heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR) and rectal temperature (1 deg) were determined and blood samples were taken to measure glucose and lactic acid concentrations. Arterial and venous blood samples were collected from the facialis artery and jugularis vein to measure blood gases, pH, hemoglobin concentration and some indicators of acid-base state of blood. The results show that the horses descendant of the purebred draught stallions (Group II) walked a longer distance and had a higher working speed than horses of Group I. The cardiorespiratory response to draught load exercise was similar in both groups of horses and was characterized by increases in HR, RR, t deg and hemoglobin concentration with small changes in blood gases. Although the venous lactic acid concentration increased significantly in both groups of horses, these values were below the anaerobic threshold and were not sufficient to modify the acid-base state of blood, suggesting that the horses were exercised under aerobic conditions
