The effect of a short-term reduction in feed on the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of albendazole in sheep. [Short contribution]

Sheep orally infected with benzimidazole-resistant strains of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis were allocated to 4 treatment groups of 6 animals each. Compared with untreated sheep offered the same ration, albendazole significantly reduced the numbers of H. contortus and T. colubriformis by 74 and 63 percent respectively. When the quantity of feed was halved 36 h before, and for 8 h after albendazole administration, the efficacy against both parasites was increased to 91 percent. The results confirm the significant interaction of feed intake and anthelmintic efficacy, consideration of which has previously been largely neglected.
