The prevalence of Streptococcus suis type 2 in Western Australian piggeries. [Short contribution]

Lungs and tonsils were sampled from pigs at slaughter from meatworks in Western Australia, representing 39 herds for lungs and 51 herds for tonsils. Overall 60 percent of pigs sampled were infected with Streptococcus suis type 2. A tonsillar carrier rate of 41-80 percent was observed in 66 percent of herds, with less than 10 percent having higher carrier rates. In contrast, 33.3 percent of the herds containing pigs with pneumonic lungs had a rate of lung carriage by individual pigs of between 81 and 100 percent. S suis type 2 was detected in 50 of the 51 piggeries sampled, the exception being a specific pathogen-free herd.
