Data from the 1986 Census of Population and Housing were used to describe changes in the logging workforce and to compare logging with other sectors of the economy. The logging workforce is a prime example of an area for which the quantitative basis of knowledge is inadequate. Measures to provide a statistical basis for industrial planning are suggested
