At the Rural Veterinary Centre of the University of Sydney, a syndrome of acute colitis is recognised that affects predominantly young Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses undergoing the stress of training and racing. Affected horses have an acute onset of fever, profuse diarrhoea, and clinical evidence of endotoxaemia. Because of the relatively characteristic manifestations of this malady, it is referred to as acute febrile diarrhoea. Although sharing many of the clinical and laboratory characteristics of other established forms of acute colitis, evidence for a specific aetiology has remained elusive. Clinical features of the syndrome in 86 cases presented to the RVC over a period of 6 y are described. It is suggested that the husbandry and management of horses associated with training, particularly for races, may predispose them to the condition.
