Lupins in sandy soil in a glasshouse were exposed to drought by withholding water. A soil water content that lead to a 60 percent reduction in leaf conductance produced no significant changes in water potential or turgor pressure of roots or leaves. The decrease in leaf conductance closely paralleled the fraction of roots in wet soil. It is suggested that dehydration of roots in dry soil may influence the stomatal response, possibly by means of phytohormones.
