Side-effects of cereal fungicides upon some arable weeds

Treatments with cereal fungicides may reduce the competitive ability of arable weeds as demonstrated by pot and field experiments. This side effect is induced by the growth regulatory potential of some cereal fungicides. Dicotyledons, including weeds, are affected mostly. The plant response depends on species, development stage and active ingredients. Frequent symptoms were shoot shortening, dark green or reddish leaves, glowing leaves, leaf necrosis, leaf deformations and a stiff growth habit. The findings were reproducible under greenhouse conditions but they were not significant in the field. The findings are relevant for the interpretation of weed competition data and for the assessment of the ecotoxicology of fungicides
