Varietal sensitivity to common bunt in wheat and to stripe disease and loose smut in barley

In 1993 and 1994, the sensitivity of wheat varieties to common bunt (Tilletia caries) in the field trials at a seeding rate of 200 kg per hectare and two concentrations of inoculum was investigated. Principally higher infestation was found in 1993, the highest level was found in the variety Sofia with 47 % of diseased ears and lowest limit in the variety Livia with only 5 % of infested ears. In 1994 the experiments were expanded by three sowing dates and a higher number of varieties applied. On average the infestation of wheat was low. In other trials carried out in the same year, higher incidence was achieved using space sowing. It is assumed that in the dense wheat crop the growing apex can escape the fungus mycelium. In 1994 a collection of spring barley infested by stripe disease (Helminthosporium gramineum) and loose smut (Ustilago nuda) was assessed. There were great differences in the susceptibility of varieties to the above-mentioned diseases. The stripe disease seems to be more dangerous for barley than loose smut.
