Mercury and selenium concentrations in sharks from northern Australian waters. [Conference paper]

Total Hg concentrations in 15 carcharhinid and 3 hammerhead species ranged widely with maximum individual concentrations exceeding 1.5 mg per kg wet weight in 11 species and values of over 3.0 mg per kg in Carcharhinus sp., C. amblyrhynchoides, C. melanopterus, C. amboinensis and Sphyrna mokarran; much of the variability was attributable to differences in length. In 6 species, males had higher concentrations of Hg than females of the same size. Alkyl Hg comprised over 80 percent of the total Hg content in the muscle. Maximum individual Se concentrations were greater than 1.0 mg per kg in 9 species, the maximum recorded being 3.4 mg per kg in C. dussumieri. Se concentration was not obviously correlated with fork length or Hg concentration.
