The field pea-wheat rotation: variety and management effects on soil nitrogen balance and wheat production

Gives detailed results of field trials using different wheat and/or pea varieties in rotations with various sowing and stubble management techniques and different nitrogen application rates. It was found that by increasing the amount of nitrogen available for wheat growth, crop legumes can help achieve potential wheat yields and reverse the chronic decline in wheat protein. On average crop legumes were worth 78 kg of urea N/ha to the first succeeding wheat crop. Variations in the levels of soil N have been achieved by varying sowing times of peas and using different stubble management techniques.
