Effects of water stress on nitrogen nutrition of grain sorghum. [Symposium paper]

Texas 610SR was grown in culture solution at five levels of nitrogen. Polyethylene glycol 6000 was used to impose solution osmotic potentials of -0.1, -0.4, -0.8 and -1.1 MPa during the fourth week. Plants were harvested at 6 weeks. Reduced nitrogen supply and solution osmotic potential both decreased dry matter yields, total plant N content, mean rate of N uptake per unit root weight and number of leaves expanded after day 21. The effects of lower solution osmotic potential were more pronounced at higher levels of N supply. Decreasing solution osmotic potential decreased mean N concentation in leaves, had no effect on mean N concentration in roots and increased N concentrations in stems plus immature leaves and in whole tops. Critical N concentration at any solution osmotic potential could not be calculated.
