In studies of 6 major soils, the rate of loss of organic C was significantly correlated with the organic-C:urease-activity ratio and the reciprocal of clay content of the virgin soils. Aggregation index (for rate of percentage loss) or exchangeable Na percentage (for rate of weight-per-volume loss) were also significantly associated with the overall rate of loss. This suggests that the relative inaccessibility and protection or organic matter against microbial and enzymic attack resulted in reduced organic C loss. Rate of loss generally decreased with depth.
