Effect of trench form and trench size on rice and fish production in the rice-cum-fish system

To evaluate the form and size of trench in rice-cum-fish system, experiments were conducted in Sukamandi Experiment Farm in the wet season 1988/1989 and the dry season 1989. In the 1988/89 wet season and the 1989 dry season the effects of middle trench, cross trench, peripheral trench, and a combination of peripheral land middle trench on rice and fish yield were studied. The fish species used was common carp (Cyprinus carpio L), and rice varieties were IR64 and Ciliwung for the wet season and the dry season, respectively. Stock densities of fingerlings were 3600 per hectare for the dry season with size of 16.5 gram and 3000 per hectare for the dry season with size 12.5 gram. Results of the experiments showed that there was no different effect of trench size and arrangement on yields of rice and fish. This experiment demonstrated that the higher fish yield in the dry season compensated to some extent the lower grain yield of Ciliwung. Because of border effect of trench, the two most ajacent rice crop rows grew better and yielded higher than the rows farther from the trench.
