Trials with broad bean varieties

During the years 1988-1991, 16 varieties of broad beans were tested in the plots of the Plant Introduction Unit of the Field Crops Institute, ARO. Most varieties were received from research institutes and seed companies worlwide. With the exception of one, all varieties belonged to the species Vicia faba major having large kernels. The varieties to be tested were chosen according to local market demand, i.e., having large kernels weighing over one gram each. Cultural practices used were identical in all the tests: seeds were sown alongside Cruciferous plants; fertilization was with 10 units each of nitrogen and phosphorus and five units of potassium; treflan (250 gr/dunam) was applied for weed control; various pesticides were used periodically to control insects and diseases. Distances between and within rows were set to obtain 6-6 plants per sq.m. Since the beans grow during the rainy season, irrigation was applied only during long dry intervals. Throughout the growing season, observations were carried out on several plant characteristics such as flowering dates, plant height, length of pod, pods per plant, kernels per pod, weight of 100 kernels and yield per sq.m.. Results obtained were the following. The varieties that excelled were Kisinevsky, Alicanre, Morsis and D'Aquadulce 62, producing from 600 to 680 gram seeds per square meter. D'Aquitanie, De Seville and D'Aquadulce had the longest pods, from 20-27 cm. in length. The varieties producing the largest kernels were D'Aquadulce (150-200 grams per 100 kernels) and De Seville (140-190 grams). In conclusion, results obtained in broad bean trials carried out over a four year period were encouraging. They proved, through high yield and large kernels, that there is a good potential for broad bean cultivation which can fit well into the winter crop rotation in Israel.
