Stream and ground water response to logging and subsequent regeneration in the southern forest of Western Australia: results from four catchments [stream flow; groundwater level; salinity; revegetation; Eucalyptus diversicolor; Eucalyptus marginata]

Regeneration began 1-30 months after logging took place between November 1976 - March 1978, in 4 small selected catchments. The regrowth was assessed in 1986, showing that total vegetation cover reached the unlogged value within 5 years, rose for 5 more years, then remained above the unlogged value. As a result of logging, annual stream flow volumes increased for 2 years then declined. Flow-weighted mean annual stream salinities reached their highest level 1-3 years after logging, then declined. Groundwater levels rose for 2-4 years after logging then declined: it appears these levels will reach pre-logging values 12-13 years after regeneration began
