Influence of chemical properties on nitrogen mineralization and nitrification in podzolized sands. Implications for [Pinus radiata] forest management

Soils collected from 39 sites on podzolized sands with varying history were found to be highly variable in organic matter content. Nitrogen mineralization was correlated with organic phosphorus content rather than with total nitrogen or total organic matter. 18 soils were classified after aerobic incubation tests as highly nitrifying, and 18 as weakly nitrifying. Discriminant analysis gave over 90 percent correct allocation to these groups using only pH and Bray extractable P for discrimination. N mineralization was correlated with total N within groups, but with a different relationship in the case of each group. Significance of the results for forest management is discussed.
