Although laboratory trials showed that they had no effect on short term mortality, return rates of anchor tags were extremely low, and were markedly heterogeneous between locations, size and sex of crab. Poor visibility of the tags, and the fact that fishermen do not examine unmarketable classes of crab, make this method unsuitable for quantitative studies.
