The prediction of processing performance of a selection of unusual wool types

Different wool types, including lambswool, cast fleeces, oddments and skirtings, in 8-20 kg batches from 15 selected Merino and crossbred wool types were processed using pilot scale techniques. Fibre diameter, staple length, staple strength and vegetable matter content were the raw wool variables most often associated with processing performance. Subsets of these variables were highly associated with differences between batches for card loss, Hauteur, Barbe and long fibre content of the tops. Comb Noil and short fibre content were the 2 processing factors least associated with the raw wool variables. The TEAM formula for prediction of Hauteur was observed to overpredict for short wools and underpredict for longer wools.
