Antigenic comparison of Italian swine fever viruses isolated from domestic pigs and wild boar [Sardinia, Tuscany]

Eight isolates of swine fever virus were characterized, including four from wild boar and four from domestic pigs. Seven isolates were from outbreaks that had occurred between 1990 and 1992, in one of two neighbouring regions of Italy. The eighth virus is a wild boar isolate made 1985. The isolates were tested for recognition by a panel of 26 monoclonal antibodies using an indirect peroxidase method to stain infected cell monolayers. The results confirmed that all of the isolates were indeed swine fever viruses and not either of the related pestiviruses, bovine viral diarrhoea virus or border disease virus. Nine of the monoclonal antibodies showed some discrimination between isolates and, on this basis, the viruses could be subdivided into five groups. Interestingly, two groups contained both a domestic pig and a wild boar isolate. Gene sequencing studies are in progress to further examine the viral relationships with a view to considering whether or not transmission between wild boar and pigs was likely to have occurred
