Reports have suggested that Eucalyptus trees in Australia sustain less insect damage than previously estimated. The logic and data interpretation of these reports are flawed. A re-evaluation of the arguments and existing data about herbivory levels is presented. Variability as a fundamental component of the ecological processes involved, which invalidates predictions based on mean levels.
