Biochemical polymorphism in three different strains of tilapia (Oreochromis sp) in Malaysia

Oreochromis spp are widely recognised as one of the most important species groups for farming in a wide range of aquaculture systems from small scale was-fed fish ponds to intensive culture systems. An ACIAR supported project entitled, 'Genetic Identification of Different Strains of Oreochromis (tilapia), Breeds and Selection Based on Progeny Testing of Broodstock for 'Improved Production' has currently been undertaken by both the University of Malaya and Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. In present study, investigation was carried out to detect biochemical polymorphism in three different strains of tilapia fish namely Oreochromis niloticus (Philippines strain), Oreochromis niloticus (Israel strain) and Oreochromis mossambicus (Thai strain). The fresh tissue samples of liver, muscle and heart from each species were obtained for analysis. Using cellulose acetate electrophoresis, ten enzymes were investigated, namely Acid phosphate, Alcohol dehydrogenase, Fructose biphosphate, Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, Iditol dehydrogenase, Lactate dehydrogenase, Malate dehydrogenase and 6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. Out of these systems, seven were known to be polymorphic. There seems to be a high degree of genetic similarity among all the population sampled indicating that they could have been derived from a relatively recent common ancestor
