Gunung Jerai, an isolated mountain surrounded by lowlying padi fields and the sea, has a diverse flora and fauna, in many cases unlike that at similar altitudes on the Main Range of Peninsular Malaysia. During 1991-1993 ornithological surveys were carried out at all altitudes on the mountain. This paper records the species of birds now present on Gunung Jerai, and analyses their altitudinal distribution. Many lowland species have extended their ranges to colonise montane altitudes of Gunung Jerai too small in area for sustained residence by montane species
