Horticultural pesticide residues in water - a survey of pesticide residues conducted in Gippsland, Victoria, 1994
1995
Chapman, R.N. | Stranger, J.W. (Victorian Dept. of Agriculture (Australia))
In March 1994, samples of surface and groundwater were collected from 5 vegetable production areas in Gippsland: Rosebud, Koo-wee-rup, Thorpdale, Orbost and Bairnsdale. The samples were assayed for a range of pesticides commonly used in each area and the results were compared with the ANZECC and USEPA environmental guidelines for fresh waters. Of 139 tests performed on samples from 21 sites, only those from 2 sites failed to meet the guidelines. Pesticide residues were detected in samples from 4 areas. Those that exceeded guidelines were atrazine at Orbost and endosulfan, chlorpyrifos and atrazine at Bairnsdale. The opportunity was also taken to screen samples for residues of dieldrin and DDT at some sites. Dieldrin was detected at Orbost and Bairnsdale, and DDT at Bairnsdale, indicating the long term residual nature of these pesticides, which are no longer used in agriculture.
