High yield forage preservation by biotechnological methods

High yield forage (alfalfa, field corn) can be ensiled by one of the following methods: Alfalfa harvest in fair weather (few rainfalls) is ensiled with lactic bacteria preparations after 8-24 hours of wilting. Alfalfa harvested in a rainy period is ensiled with 20 percent addition of roughage in order to have a higher percentage of DM or with 0.5-1.0 percent acid preparations for a better preservation. The field corn harvested in the milk-dough stage is ensiled in very good conditions with an addition of lactic acid bacteria. A good preservation of the field corn is obtained with sandwich-type silage or with unique mixture-type silage. Due to the alfalfa and mineral addition a good balance of the energy and protein levels is achieved. Another possibility is the addition of 0.4 percent urea at ensiling field corn; a higher content of nitrogen containing matter is thus obtained and at the same time a buffering activity is noticed. All these activities are performed in good conditions with the ensiling equipment to which a new equipment for the addition of Lactosil preparation is fitted.
