Response of different genotypes to intensity of winter pruning. 2: Multivariate analysis as a tool to evaluate self-regulation mechanisms and quality-quantity relationships [vite, Trentino-Alto Adige]

Three pruning levels have been applied on 4 cultivars cultivated in several areas of Trentino (N-E Italy). The elaboration of vegetative, productive and juice's analitical data has been done by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Four functions, representing 78% of total variance, have been extracted. These functions have been defined on the basis of the variables that characterize them: PC1 "balanced yield per shoot and quality", PC2 "unbalanced vegetation/yield and instability of acidity", PC3 "high productivity and no good ripening", PC4 "high shoot fertility, high sugar and potassium concentration". Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay showed high PC1 values whilst the reverse was true for Schiava, particularly for high bud number/vine treatment. Moreover, this treatment increased PC2 values for Schiava e Chardonnay, whilst increased PC3 only for Schiava. Low bud number treatment increased shoot fertility, sugar and potassium concentration in juice in Cabernet Sauvignon. The paper points out the role of PCA procedure to understand the physiological behaviour of vines, allowing us, in this experience, to study the varietal self-regulation, and the adaptability to pruning level mechanism
