Sward recultivation by direct drilling after application of a growth inhibitor

Effects of the growth inhibitor Shorty applied to regrowing sward after cutting were studied. After the application, the sward was recultivated by direct drilling of clover and grass/clover mixture. The sward treated with Shorty at full tillering stage of grasses yellowed on the summer. Concentration of chlorophyll (a+b) was 0.29 g.m** (-2) in the analyzed Dactylis glomerata at treated plots. It was 15 % less than at the non-treated control. The highest of the treated sward was also lower in comparison with the control. In the year of trial establishment, the yield was 1.3 t.ha** (-1) at the non-treated control and it was lower by 38.5 % at the treated plots. Consequently, retarding effects of the inhibitor influenced the original sward regrowth. In following harvest years, the yield increased on the average by 7 % at the treated overdrilled plots, depending on the species undersown. Among the reseeded species, grasses with rapid development (Dactylis glomerata, Lolium perenne) established and grew well in combination with Trifolium pratense (tetraploid cv. Sigord) which produced dense tufts at 70 % proportion of the area.
