Harwood, M. (Australian Dept. of Primary Industries and Energy, Canberra) | Richey, S. (Australian Fisheries Management Authority)
The United Nations Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks is discussed. The Conference dealt with highly controversial issues relating to how major international fisheries should be managed and the respective rights and obligations of coastal states and distant water fishing nations (DWFNs). Key questions related to access, allocation, overfishing, compliance and enforcement. Australia has significant interests at stake, particularly in relation to highly migratory species such as southern bluefish tuna.
