Research in low input cropping systems. Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) as living mulch and green manure in the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) - sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) [Latium]. Pt.1

A two-year experiment was carried out to test the performance of a conventional cropping system (a wheat-sunflower rotation, which is common in Central Italy) in comparison with the same cropping system with subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L., cv. Mount Barker) as a living mulch in the wheat and as a green manure for the following sunflower. Results from the first cycle of rotation show that the intercropped wheat yielded only 7% less than the pure wheat, despite the halved sowing rate. This intercropped wheat performance was due to an increased (+44%) tillering index and a higher 1000-seed weight. Subclover green manuring affected sunflower grain yield positively, according to the amount of the aboveground biomass ploughed in. The increase in grain yield was 86 and 58% with total and partial green manuring, respectively. Vengono riferiti i risultati sperimentali relativi al confronto di un avvicendamento convenzionale di frumento-girasole, con uno alternativo che prevedeva l'introduzione del trifoglio sotterraneo utilizzato prima come living mulch nel cereale e successivamente come coltura da sovescio a beneficio del girasole. I risultati relativi al primo ciclo di sperimentazione indicano che il frumento consociato con il trifoglio, pur coltivato a meta' della densita' di investimento della coltura pura, da' mediamente produzioni di granella di poco inferiori al frumento tradizionale (-7%) grazie ad un piu' elevato indice di accestimento (+44%) ed un maggior peso unitario delle cariossidi (+10%). Il sovescio del trifoglio ha un effetto positivo sul girasole che incrementa le rese in proporzione all'entita' della biomassa sovesciata (+86% e +58% rispettivamente per la coltura con sovescio totale e parziale della biomassa). Nel sistema di coltivazione alternativo si e' rilevato inoltre un minor sviluppo delle infestanti che sono risultate in peso, alla raccolta delle colture, inferiori del 20% nel frumento e del 35% nel girasole
