Biogeochemical cycling of boron in native eucalypt forests of South-western Australia [Eucalyptus marginata; E. calophylla; E. diversicolor]

The importance of the biological components of the system is indicated by the amount of B stored within trees (2.1 and 2.5 kg per ha for jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and karri (E. diversicolor) forests respectively), in comparison with the amount of extractable B in soils to a depth of 1 m (2 and 7 kg per ha for jarrah and karri forests respectively), and by highly significant correlations between hot-water-soluble B and organic carbon for these soils. Ratios of B to chloride in seawater, rainwater and streamwater are similar, but higher ratios are found for eucalypt tissues and soils. The higher ratios suggest preferential uptake or retention of B relative to chloride in plant and organic matter parts of the ecosystems.
