Observations over an irrigation cycle found that all measures of soil and plant water status showed some benefit of amelioration, in the order gypsum slots, paraplow, control. The trend was reflected in photosynthetic productivity. It was clear that exposed subsoils can be utilised effectively only with amelioration, unusally frequent irrigation, or both.
