Soil and plant analyses provide indications of nitrogen supply status in relation to plant growth. Predicting nitrogen supply and demand for a given season to meet desired objectives in terms of grain yield and quality is very difficult. Reliable models integrating the effects of management on nitrogen supply and demand in different regions according to soil type and probable climate ideally should be based on scientific knowledge of the behaviour of nitrogen in soil.
