Lime requirement of acidic Queensland soils, 1. Relationships between soil properties and pH buffer capacity

The pH buffer capacity of 40 acidic surface soils was determined from soil-CaCO3-moist incubations, giving a range of 0.2 to 5.4 g CaCO3 per kg soil per pH unit increase. Organic C, clay content, effective cation exchange capacity, 1 M KCl extractable acidity and Al, and the change in surface negative charge with pH were measured and correlated with pH buffer capacity. Of the soil properties which could be routinely measured, a multiple regression equation combining organic C, clay content and exchange acidity accounted for 85 percent of the variance in buffer capacity, with organic C being the most important.
