The effect of nitrogen fertilizing on apple-tree uptake of nitrogen and its distribution in the tree parts

A pot trial that was laid out by planting apple-tree graftlings of cv. James Grieve on rootstock M9. The whole plants were sampled to subject the particular organs to chemical analysis. The apple-trees without nitrogen applications accumulated in their roots in fall more than 40 % of total nitrogen contained in the plant. The trees with nitrogen applications accumulated only about 25 % of total nitrogen in their roots. Leaves showed the highest N concentrations. About 60 % of total nitrogen were accumulated in leaves and branches in nitrogen treatments while it was only 40 % of total nitrogen in apple-trees without nitrogen applications. Nitrogen concentration per dry matter unit was highest in apple-tree organs after ammonium nitrate applications. Apple-trees fertilized with DAM 390 had the highest biomass production while this trait was lowest in the trees without nitrogen fertilizing. Ammonium nitrate applications increased blossom setting to the greatest extent, on the other hand fall foliar applications of urea solution rather decreased the blossom number.
