Storage of seed at constant temperatures of 10-10, 25-25, and 40-40 deg C did not significantly decrease the hardseed content of most of the annual legumes examined in laboratory experiments. Fluctuating temperatures of 40-10 and 40-25 deg C resulted in large decreases in the hardseed content of the cvv. T. subterraneum Clare and Woogenellup, but only small changes for the annual medics, with cv. Nungarin being intermediate. Field observations followed a similar pattern. It is proposed that, provided their seed set is adequate, cultivars with comparatively low levels of hardseed may perform better than expected when grown in a summer rainfall environment.
