Gamma- interferon was selected as an example of important cytokines in the regulation of the immune system of the sheep. By the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using primers based on the bovine gamma- interferon sequence, the ovine gene was amplified from crude messenger RNA extracted from lymphocytes. It was found that ovine gamma- interferon is 93 percent identical with bovine in amino acid sequence. This result indicates that the PCR method will be a rapid and efficient means for cloning other ovine cytokine genes.
