Holstein Friesian cows were given ground maize with and without meat and bone meal (MBM) in 3 daily amounts and at 2 levels of crude protein. They grazed nitrogen-fertilised tropical grass and grass-legume pastures. Milk production was recorded over 300 days. For milk yields over either 100 or 300 days, a linear response was recorded. Cows receiving MBM lost less liveweight in the first 100 days, and gained more over the whole period.
