The method of indirect LAI estimation is based on measurements of light transmission through a canopy layer, which is less laborious and much faster. Several examples of LAI measurements in forest stands are demonstrated. Canopy Analyzer LI-2000 (LI-COR., USA), Ceptometer (Degacon, USA), DEMON (CSIRO, Australia), ALA-02 (ASES, CR), a cable tram-way system for light transmission measurements and a system of steady point photocell sensors placed below a canopy were used for indirect LAI estimation. It is necessary to realize that the indirect method produces only relative LAI values and therefore, only results obtained from the same instrument and using the same acceptable method can be compared.
