Plasma, liver and fat alpha-tocopherol concentrations in sheep given various oral and subcutaneous doses of vitamin E

In plasma, significant responses were observed after 1 and 4 days in sheep given oral doses but not in those given subcutaneous injections. Liver concentrations after a month were increased only by the highest doses orally, but from subcutaneous doses at almost all levels, suggesting a slow mobilisation from the injection site. Concentrations in adipose tissue were not affected. Plasma and liver levels were positively correlated, though treatments and time from treatment had small but significant effects on the relationship. It is suggested that oral dosage is preferable to subcutaneous injection; an oral dose of about 120 mg per kg liveweight will probably maintain adequate liver levels for about 2 months in sheep on diets of low Vitamin E content.
